Dishwashers Use Less Water to Clean Items Than Handwashing
A myth has developed over the years that washing plates by hand will use less water than if one used a dishwasher. Well, research shows the opposite is true. A study by the University of Bonn in Germany found that dishwashers used at least 80 percent less water than washing by hand.[1]It discovered on average that dishwashers used 13 litres of water to clean 144 items compared with 100 litres of water used to wash the same load by hand.
These findings were backed up by a separate US study which revealed that a large load would take 170.5 litres of water to wash by hand, compared to less than 20 litres in a dishwasher.
