As part of its ongoing campaign to raise awareness about breast cancer and highlight the importance of regular screenings, Gargash Hospital, recently organized a fashion walk – Warriors’ Way Forward – to demonstrate to the community that it is possible to a have a normal life after cancer if detected at an early stage and treated right for a complete cure.
During the fashion walk, few breast cancer survivors walked the ramp exuding the strength and determination of a warrior. The brave women – the Heroes – belonging to different walks of the society, age group, and ethnicity, shared stories of their battle with cancer and how they overcame their common nemesis. They urged the women present to believe that there is always hope after being diagnosed with breast cancer. The designers – Ms. Rana & Ms. Rosa, showcased a collection of daily wear especially designed for women battling with breast cancer using a special fabric provided by Cotton On.
Speaking at the event, Mrs. Ghada Sawalmah, CEO – Gargash Hospital, said, “Breast cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer deaths among women in the UAE. Early detection is key in the successful treatment of breast cancer, as it also increases the survival rate. The strength and determination shown by these warriors is truly commendable. I hope their stories will inspire more women to come forward and undergo screening mammograms, and together we can bring down the breast cancer deaths in the UAE.”
Dr. Eman Oweida, Consultant Radiology, spoke about the well-equipped Radiology Department at Gargash Hospital, where they have the Invenia ABUS 2.0, which is an automated breast ultrasound machine that uses remarkable image quality, coronal view, and advanced interpretation tools to look differently at dense breast tissues for adjunctive screening and diagnostic exams.
October is regarded as the breast cancer awareness month and health campaigns are conducted worldwide to increase awareness of the disease or to raise funds for research into its cause, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure. Given that breast cancer affects 1 in 8 women, there is always hope that the disease can be treated effectively if there is an early detection of a suspicious growth, and proper follow-up examinations and treatment are done.
