A patient who has lost his sight for about a week in the right eye and at the same time suffers from problems in his paranasal sinuses, with a previous record of two surgeries in the sinuses at different hospitals.
The patient went to the International Medical Center, where the case required an accurate and quick diagnosis to find out the problem, which is the task that DR. Yasmine Bakh, Consultant Diagnostic Radiologist, did an MRI and CT scan of the case. The accurate diagnosis came with the patient’s suffering from chronic sinusitis, acute sinusitis with pressure on the optic nerve on the right side.
The work done by Dr. Yasmine Bakh helped the sinus and skull base surgery team at the hospital to take the decision to perform a special and urgent surgery within only 24 hours, as the operation was performed by professor Osama Marghalani, Consultant Ear, Nose and Throat Surgeon, along with Dr. Hassan Bawazeer, Consultant Otolaryngologist, assisted by the nursing team.
The peculiarity of this surgery was that performing any normal surgery for the patient may represent a great danger to him, given the sensitivity and danger of the surgery site, which is located in the middle of the brain, the base of the skull and the eye socket, so the surgery team’s decision was to use the surgical navigation device using electromagnetic technology, and had it not been for the advanced technology of the International Medical Center, there would have been a great surgical challenge with major risks to the nearby structure if we didn’t have this expertise, skill, and technology available.
The patient underwent immediate endoscopic sinus navigation with the sinuses fully opened and having the optic nerve restored, where the sinuses were found to be pus-filled and clogged with scar tissue caused by two previous surgeries in the past.
Immediately after the surgery, the patient began to regain his sight with gradual improvement until he came back to normal, thanks to God.
