Ten Free Physicians to Heal Back Pain

As a New York-based spinal surgeon, I have spent my life treating chronic pain. I have seen so many people sometimes suffer needlessly with behaviors based upon poor habits and thinking. So many people want the latest titanium spinal construct to solve their pain and cannot understand that there may be far simpler ways to help themselves.

I saw a lady Theresa who demanded surgery for her severe lower back pain. She displayed severe low back pain with movement and a routine neurological examination on physical examination. Her MRI showed mild lumbar spine degeneration without evidence of spinal instability or compressions. I counseled her on standard conservative treatments, including a brace, physical therapy and pain management. We started to discuss her size, and at 5 feet 4 inches and 260 pounds, she is considered medically obese. Tess became visibly hurt and defensive. “It’s easy to blame my weight on this lower back pain, yet, I only eat 2 small healthy meals a day.” So, we discussed more, and she stated for my calm and feel good, “I eat 6 small cookies each night before bed.” So, we searched online, and the small shortbread cookies were 100 calories each. So mathematically, I pointed out that each cookie at 100 calories X 365 days per year leading to 36,500 calories per year. With 3500 calories per pound, there are 10 pounds of weight gain per cookie per day. I advised her that metabolism and weight gain is not clearly related; however, at worst, she could gain 60 pounds in one year. She was hurt at first and then happy to have a thought of freedom.

Combining with the globally known and award-winning producers Dr. Gregory Knowles, Dr. James Fallon and sound engineer Joe Costable of Bimperl, I wrote a meditation of all the typical pearls that people may not be aware of, which may directly influence their spinal health and diminish their back pain. All the pearls are introduced in this meditation to help one be the most aware of all of the everyday factors you have in your hand, at your disposal for free. In terms of mental well-being, what are the physical strategies of happiness? What do meditation leaders and masters do? What is the consequence of positive and negative thinking? What are the strategies of “eating right?” How do you incrementally become mindful of your posture? How does deep belly breathing enhance the spine and your emotions? How do you incrementally build your strength by doing 25 pushups/sit-ups a day and a minute of planking? How to move from a stuck and stiff person to developing flexibility and range-of-motion? How to plan and get 8 hours of sleep at night? What are ergonomic clothes, and how many hours should you wear heels anyway?
