Swiss International Scientific School Dubai is sponsoring an enthralling exhibition of Swiss books at this week’s Dubai Design Week.
Taking place 8-13 November, 2021, Dubai Design Week is an annual week-long festival celebrating regional design and creativity through free-to-attend exhibitions, installations, engaging activities and pop-ups, talks and workshops.
“The Most Beautiful Swiss Books” exhibition takes visitors on an experiential journey, uncovering what goes into creating a book design. Alongside SISD, The Embassy of Switzerland has collaborated with UAE-based creative studio Hamzat Wasl and Zayed University, supported by Harradine Golf and Reichle & De-Massari, to stage the event.
Ruth Burke, Principal of the bilingual IB school, which is the largest Swiss school outside of Switzerland, says: “While we have an entirely global approach to our multi-lingual studies, we are still, at heart, very proud of our Swiss origins. The opportunity to sponsor such a beautiful exhibition within the Dubai Design Week aligns with many of our goals as an educational institution that aims to help pupils understand their studies in the wider context of a global society.
“Books, of course, are synonymous with learning, broadening one’s horizons and for inspiring us all.”
The journey begins with typography and the art of designing a book. “The Most Beautiful Swiss Books” is a collection of 19 books awarded this prize by the Swiss Federal Office of Culture (FOC) in 2020. The exhibition takes us right back to black ink being pressed onto paper.
Through a variety of media and performative arts, visitors will be engaged in the review process that earned these books the title and can explore featured works by students of Zayed University, and reinterpretations of art covers of selected books using modern printing press techniques.
“Our students attending the Dubai Design Week will get a hands-on opportunity to discover what goes into making a book, the creative process and some of the artistic and technical aspects that have to come into play. We believe it holds great value as an interesting, fun and memorable learning experience,” adds Terence Connolly, Head of Visual Arts at the school.
Dubai Design Week is owned and managed by the Art Dubai Group, and is held under the dedicated patronage of Her Highness Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairperson of Dubai Culture and Arts Authority (DCAA). It is in strategic partnership with Dubai Design District (d3), and supported by Dubai Culture & Arts Authority and A.R.M. Holding.
The exhibition takes place at Dubai Design District (d3), Building 7, R09.
