The Emirates Dubai 7s: Cricket presented by Zurich Life Insurance will take place on 2nd – 4th December alongside founding sport rugby 7s and more recent addition Netball when 7s returns to the desert.
The Cricket tournament will feature 48 teams and take place on the three world-class cricket ovals at The Sevens Stadium. The tournament format will also be 7 a-side with some additions to simplify the game and make it more exciting for players and fans alike.
Tournament Director, Tom Burwell, said of the addition of Cricket, “We are hugely excited to be able to further showcase sports & entertainment in the region with the addition of Cricket to our sporting family.”
“Cricket is a sport loved worldwide and played by men and women from a wide variety of cultures and demographics. The Emirates Dubai 7s is already the biggest sports & entertainment festival in the region, with over 100,000 fans joining us over the three days. Cricket will only add to the party with a new flavour for all involved on and off the field.”
“Over the coming years, we intend to build and develop the Cricket tournament into a vital pillar of the festival. Celebrating the culture, the sport and very much the diversity that the sport brings to the Emirates Dubai 7s. There is a substantial cricketing community in the UAE. We are excited to welcome these teams to participate and compete to become the inaugural champions of the Emirates Dubai 7s: Cricket presented by Zurich Life Insurance.”
The Emirates Dubai 7s: Cricket is presented by Zurich International Life (Zurich). They are supporting the delivery of Cricket from launch through to the tournament. This will include the Youth Cricket 7s tournaments in the autumn and the festival of Cricket itself.
Simon Price, Head of Market Management at Zurich in the Middle East, said, “We’re delighted to see cricket become part of the long-standing Emirates Dubai 7s festival – and very pleased to get an opportunity to play an active role in this, further expanding our existing support to the UAE cricket community.”
“We’ll also be extending our support to the youth cricket tournaments leading up to the 2021 festival, in line with our vision to encourage and nurture young talent in the region. This is definitely an exciting partnership for us, and we can’t wait to come and take part at The Sevens Stadium later this year.”
