Changan Automobile’s remarkable achievements in energy efficiency, low-carbon initiatives, and green transformation have earned it a place among the 2024 “Pioneer” enterprises for industrial carbon peak selected by the China Federation of Industrial Economics, which announced the list on November 30, 2024. The enterprises have been recognized for providing internal practices and references for achieving national peak carbon goals as well as international carbon barriers and contribute to global climate cooperation.
Changan Automobile’s replicable pathways and practical experiences in corporate carbon emissions, technological innovation, supply chain development, product offerings, and carbon footprint accounting make it a model for green and low-carbon development. Changan is committed to supporting global sustainable development goals with environmentally friendly, high-performance e-mobility solutions for the lifestyles of customers around the world, including the Middle East and Africa.
Pioneering Green Low-Carbon Technologies Through Innovation
The automaker has heavily invested in green low-carbon technological innovations. Its new Blue Whale hybrid HE series engine achieves a maximum thermal efficiency of 44.28%. Its P13 dual-motor hybrid drive system, with a driving efficiency of 97.3%, ranks among industry leaders, earning it the “China Heart” 2023 Top Ten Engine and Hybrid System Award.
In October, Changan introduced the third-generation intelligent Blue Whale system, which features cutting-edge hardware and the proprietary IEM3.0 smart power control system. This “software-defined power” innovation reduced vehicle costs to as low as 0.03 EUR per kilometer.
In the battery sector, Changan has partnered with TBL New Energy to develop a solid-state lithium battery without separators, offering users enhanced safety, efficiency, and durability. The company also collaborates with partners on battery
Transforming Into an Intelligent, Low-Carbon Mobility Technology Company
Empowered by its achievements in green and low-carbon manufacturing, technology, and industry, Changan is accelerating its “Shangri-La” plan in the Middle East and Africa (MEA) region. As part of this, it is bringing its advanced new energy brands like AVATR and the forthcoming DEEPAL to customers in the Middle East. These brands represent Changan’s innovative strides in electric mobility and underscore its commitment to supporting the region’s sustainability goals.
Changan’s flagship premium intelligent electric vehicle (EV) brand, AVATR, was introduced into the region in 2024, and it will bring its NEV-focused brand, DEEPAL, to the Middle East in 2025. With AVATR and DEEPAL, Changan is offering more locally tailored high-performance e-mobility solutions for local customers.
In November 2024, Changan’s new energy vehicle sales exceeded 100,000 units for the first time, a 98.4% year-on-year increase, marking a significant milestone in its transition to electrification and intelligence.
Changan Automobile has also actively participated in developing 15 Chinese and international carbon footprint standards, including those for vehicle lifecycle assessment and passenger car product category rules. These efforts reaffirm Changan’s leadership in achieving carbon peak goals in the industrial sector.
Actively Advancing “Dual Carbon” Goals: Reducing Carbon Emissions by 50,000 Tons in Manufacturing
Across its manufacturing bases, Changan Automobile has undertaken over 100 energy-saving and carbon-reduction initiatives in the past three years, including energy efficiency optimization, process improvements, lean start-stop systems, and production scheduling enhancements. These efforts have reduced its manufacturing carbon emissions by 50,000 tons. In 2023, energy consumption per unit of output decreased by 19.35% compared to 2020, while CO2 emissions per unit dropped by 26.71%. Additionally, 12 of Changan’s manufacturing facilities completed photovoltaic station installations with a total capacity of 253
Changan Automobile also established a state-of-the-art smart factory integrating advanced technologies like 5G, AI, and digital twins. It has achieved a 20% increase in manufacturing efficiency, a 20% cost reduction, and a 19% decrease in energy consumption, setting a global benchmark.
These steadfast carbon reduction efforts have earned Changan Automobile recognition from national and industry bodies. In addition to the “Pioneer” enterprise honor from the China Federation of Industrial Economics, it was rated a “Five-Star Enterprise” by the Energy Conservation and Green Development Evaluation Center in November 2024.
Driving Green Supply Chain Development
As a leader in the automotive supply chain, Changan Automobile is committed to sustainable development throughout the industry ecosystem. It has established a carbon data management model (V1.0) and supplier carbon emissions accounting guidelines (V1.0).
Currently, 98.4% of its suppliers are IATF16949 certified, 95.1% hold ISO14001 certification, and 20% are certified as green factories or enterprises.
