Myopia, also known as short-sightedness, is a prevalent condition that hampers a person’s ability to see objects at a distance. The growing prevalence of myopia has been an alarming issue worldwide. According to the National Institutes of Health, around 50% of the world’s population will be affected by it by 2050. This surge can be attributed to various lifestyle factors, including extensive screen usage with smartphones. Traditionally, wearing myopic glasses is the primary approach to myopia correction. However, myopic glasses have been found to inadvertently cause peripheral images to form behind the retina, potentially exacerbating myopia by promoting axial elongation. In contrast, defocus glasses offer an alternative solution. Defocus glasses utilize specialized lenses to create intentional defocus in front of the retina. This triggers a visual induction signal, effectively inhibiting axial elongation and alleviating the development of myopia and NITM symptoms.
Revolutionizing the Eyecare Industry with the On-device HONOR AI Defocus Display
Acknowledging the growing prevalence of shortsightedness attributed to the prolonged use of smartphones, HONOR is working diligently to mitigate the impact of myopia by developing effective strategies for managing this widespread condition. Inspired by defocus glasses, HONOR has developed the industry’s first AI Defocus Display technology, debuting in the HONOR Magic V3.
This pioneering technology uses on-device AI algorithms to simulate the effects of defocus incorporated multiple segments (DIMS) on the display of the HONOR Magic V3. By inducing controlled defocus in the user’s peripheral visual field, DIMS inhibits the elongation of the eye axial, thereby mitigating the development of myopia. Similarly, the HONOR AI Defocus display applies a graphics algorithm to replicate the controlled defocus effect while ensuring that the clarity of the display is not affected. Additionally, the defocus display automatically adjusts according to external light sources and application scenarios to provide the best visual experience.
To optimize the utilization of the AI Defocus Display, the HONOR Magic V3 incorporates a thoughtful reminder system. When users engage with the device continuously for more than 30 minutes, whether they are streaming videos or reading an e-book, a Magic Capsule notification will appear to keep users informed of their screen time and prompt users to activate the AI Defocus Display for added comfort. This feature can be toggled on and off manually.
HONOR has conducted extensive scientific tests to substantiate the effectiveness of the AI Defocus Display. According to the tests, the feature is effective at reducing transient myopia by 13 degrees on average in a 25-minute session[2]. Testing results also showed that the thickness of the central choroid increased after completing a visual task for 24 minutes with the AI Defocus Display function enabled.
