Saudi Arabia’s Team Falcons are on course to complete a hat-trick of Esports World Cup tournament titles after moving within touching distance of another Grand Final in Riyadh on Sunday – the very last day of the inaugural Esports World Cup.
On a scintillating Saturday in the Saudi capital, the hometown heroes and first-ever EWC Club Championship winners secured passage to the semi-finals in faultless fashion, breezing past FURIA Esports 4-0 in the Rocket League quarter-finals.
After progressing to the last eight without losing a single game, this latest whitewash win was another illustration of their title-winning credentials. Heading into ‘Super Sunday’, they face Germany’s G2 in the semi-final before the victor faces Team BDS or Gen.G hours later for glory and the $550,000 first prize.
Elsewhere on the penultimate day of the eight-week esports extravaganza, the two-day PUBG: Battlegrounds Grand Finals kicked off in style. North American club TSM leads the way at the halfway stage with 54 points – one ahead of fellow American club FaZe and two clear of third-placed KWANGDONG FREECS. There was also action from ESL R1 with Team Redline leading the way heading into the Super Sunday finale.
The Esports World Cup has a $60 million prize pool, the largest ever in industry history. Following the conclusions of the Rocket League, PUBG: Battlegrounds, and ESL R1 Grand Finals on Sunday, the highly anticipated Closing Ceremony will bring down the curtain on the biggest moment in pro esports history to date.
International artists Steve Aoki, Kid Cudi, and Sevdaliza will sound out the perfect ending to a fantastic two months in Riyadh – with audiences set to attend and celebrate in their many thousands.
