As I began to put pen to paper, I had no idea how it would pan out. I’ve never written anything in my life, other than the odd Birthday and Christmas card. It is interesting, funny, sad, and a little bit different. It’s simply the story of me as a Boy, with a brilliant Mum, from a hard up working class family, growing up in the 1950’s, then making his way in life. Quite a bit of this book, is about my racing career, what I’ve tried, is write more about the Teams and other Drivers, rather than boring you with how good or bad I was, as I’m fully aware, that unless you are a Motor Racing fan, it would certainly do just that. What you read is what really happened, I just hope I will be able to paint a picture with my words. Hope you will find it a good read. Rick Shortle.
“My life has been extremely varied but, through it all, I’ve lived by the philosophy of always doing one’s best – and never forgetting the people who have helped you along the way,” explains the author. “My racing days were definitely the glory years of my life, and I’m so thankful for the people I met along the way. Quite a few of them have made it into the book.”
Continuing, “My message to readers is to always give 110%, follow your dreams and – even if they don’t work out exactly as planned – try and have a lot of fun along the way. I look back with fond memories, and anyone else can do the same with their life.”
Reviews have been glowing. Soames writes, “A real eye-opener from Rick. What a modest chap he is! We’ve known Rick for several years but we never knew what a great and varied life he has led. Great read and I’d recommend it to anyone. Takes me back through my childhood – many similarities. My how things have changed. We know this is a very open and honest account. Great stuff!”
Anthony Bee say’s “I have just finished your book. What a cracking read! Obviously I could relate to your motor racing stories having attended the Brands Hatch Racing School.”
Will adds, “I bought this book direct from Rick. It is an honest down to earth book about his life and his racing. I could not put it down. I remember the 70s and 80s at Brands, I was part of that era as well. What shines through is his determination to succeed, and his sence of humour never left him through all his trials and tribulations. A brilliant book well written, a must for any motor racing fan or those who want to read a true story about real life.”
