Five days out from the highly anticipated Riyadh 2023 Global Esports Games (#GEG23), the flagship multi-title competition running from December 12-16, the Saudi Esports Federation (SEF) has announced exciting tournament format details.
Hosted by SEF and presented by the Global Esports Federation (GEF), the showpiece event returns for its third edition with five days of thrilling action, intense battles, and unforgettable moments awaiting audiences. Over 250 elite competitors and more than 50 esports nations are competing at #GEG23 where five sensational tournaments are taking place across world-renowned titles including Dota 2, eFootball™️ 2024, PUBG MOBILE, and Street Fighter 6.
Saudi Esports Federation CEO, Turki Al-Fawzan, said: “The Riyadh 2023 Global Esports Games are going to be epic and we’re sure today’s announcement will take the pre-event buzz to a whole new level. With glory, bragging rights, and huge prizes at stake, elimination tournaments featuring the world’s best teams and talent always captivate audiences. The stage is set for history to repeat itself in the Saudi capital and we can’t wait for the action to begin on December 12. This event is sure to showcase to the world why esports is the fastest-growing and most entertaining sport on the planet. The Games are simply unmissable.”
A convergence of esports, sports, technology, entertainment, culture, and the #worldconnected gaming community, #GEG23 promises to deliver an extraordinary spectacle on the grandest stage of global esports, live from Saudi eLeagues, Riyadh. After a gripping qualifying series where a field of 104 countries and 1,165 players was narrowed down to 56 and 250+ for the finals, the stage is set for #GEG23 to take the esports world by storm.
Launching proceedings on Tuesday, December 12 is the Dota 2 Open. Dota 2 is the deepest multi-player action, real-time strategy (RTS) game ever created and one of the world’s biggest Esports titles. At #GEG23, eight of the world’s best countries are facing off in single elimination format with the final taking place on Friday 16th.
Also kicking off #GEG23 on December 12 is Street Fighter 6, one of the highest-grossing video game franchises of all time and a staple of gaming folklore that has flourished over the decades. An incredible showdown will commence in Riyadh as 33 countries begin their campaign in a round-robin shootout.
Represented by an elite athlete, each country will engage in several battles in a bid to make the tournament’s single elimination main stage. The next day, Wednesday 13, those left standing will look to land fearsome flurries and knockout finishes en route to Street Fighter 6 victory.
Entering the fray on December 13 is eFootball™️ 2024, the universally popular football title published by Konami. Represented by an athlete, 31 countries will compete in the three-day tournament, with 16 progressing from the round-robin to single elimination phase. The top two will eventually meet in the final for global supremacy on Friday 16.
On December 14, the Dota 2 Women tournament will begin. Exactly like the Dota 2 Open, eight of the world’s best countries are facing off in single elimination format. The final takes place on Saturday 16.
Meanwhile, PUBG MOBILE also graces the #GEG23 spotlight for the first time on December 14. A global gaming phenomenon, PUBG MOBILE has been published in over 200 countries and downloaded over a billion times, with 50 million daily active users and envious status as the most watched mobile Esports game on the planet. The objective at #GEG23? Parachute onto the remote island below and remain as the last team standing. This point system tournament concludes Friday 15.
Convening leaders, igniting conversations
SEF has also announced that GEFcon, the sole thought-leadership esports event worldwide, will be held on December 12. A global convention of thought leaders and idea creators, GEFcon will convene leading minds from the world of esports, sports, technology, business, academia, and other talents to share ideas and strategies that will define esports in a connected future. Speakers from SEF and GEF will also contribute, igniting essential conversations about building a stronger, healthier, more diverse, inclusive, and innovative esports world.
“The Global Esports Games rank alongside a select few as the pinnacle of our industry,” added Al-Fawzan. “There’s therefore no stage better suited to bring esports leaders together and chart a new course towards its destiny. We’re looking forward to welcoming attendees and taking more monumental strides forward in esports’ unprecedented development.”
