37 new faculty members join AUS’ world-class academic body

As part of American University of Sharjah’s (AUS) commitment to academic excellence and expanding its academic portfolio, it has welcomed 37 new distinguished faculty members for this fall semester.

Research, interactive teaching, student and faculty engagement, academic support and sustainability were some of the topics covered during a two-day orientation event held on August 16 and 17 and organized by the AUS Center for Innovation in Teaching and Learning for the new faculty members.

The induction provided them with an overview of AUS’ programs, policies and services, as well as an opportunity to meet key university academic and administrative staff.

Brought on board to reinforce the university’s scholarly stature, AUS’ new faculty bring with them a wealth of knowledge and research in the areas of mathematics and statistics, molecular biology and oncology, electrical engineering, cyber security, industrial engineering, design, performing arts, finance, psychology, blockchain, creative writing, sociology, management, philosophy and critical theory, environmental microbiology and politics, computer science, visual communication, anthropology and other fields.

“We, at AUS, believe in our vital role to keep up with changing industry trends and align ourselves with global scientific discoveries and research. Our new faculty will further strengthen our approach to learning and research. We continuously seek academics of the highest caliber to join our AUS family and be active participants in the UAE and world development agenda,” said Dr. Mohamed El-Tarhuni, Interim Provost and Chief Academic Officer at AUS.

As AUS continues its ascent among the world’s leading institutions, the new faculty form an integral part of its trajectory towards sustained excellence. They join AUS’ world-class faculty, who represent 46 nationalities and are recognized for their research achievements across disciplines. Through their work, they contribute to advances in emerging fields, influence other research projects across the world and offer students the opportunity to engage in cutting-edge research. Today, AUS ranks second in the UAE in the number of international faculty and citations per faculty, according to QS World University Ranking (2023).

“We welcome our new faculty members and look forward to seeing them share their knowledge and experiences with our students and be part of the AUS mission to produce innovators and global citizens capable of making a difference in their communities,” said Dr. El-Tarhuni.

Recognized among the top 25 percent of universities in the world by QS World University Ranking (2024) and among the top 10 Arab universities every year for the past eight consecutive years by QS Arab Region University Ranking (2023), AUS has positioned itself as an incubator for innovation, assembler of talent, producer of knowledge and an active force for social transformation and well-being in the region and the world.
