Saudi Arabia marks an impactful moment in motorsports history as Extreme E wraps up its first ever race in the Kingdom

An action-packed weekend of the exhilarating Desert X Prix was wrapped up yesterday at AlUla, the Saudi Kingdom’s breathtaking destination. The race marked the launch of the new FIA-backed motorsport racing series that aims to address the global challenge of sustainability and highlights the great competitive capabilities of environmentally friendly technologies.

HRH Prince Khaled bin Sultan Al Abdullah Al Faisal, Chairman of the Saudi Automobile and Motorcycle Federation (SAMF) said: “We created history in Saudi Arabia launching this incredibly impactful racing series at the beautiful AlUla, where a very challenging terrain was presented to be overcome by a combination of some of the world’s best drivers along with cutting edge environmentally friendly machines. The much-anticipated arrival of Extreme E was very well welcomed by the world of Motorsports, as proven by the incredible global interest it generated shown by the impressive viewership figures.”

The leading objective of the Extreme E series is to highlight the climate change challenges faced by different ecosystems around the world, whilst showcasing the performance of all-electric SUVs in extreme conditions.

In line with the sustainability goals set by Vision 2030, HRH Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman launched the Saudi Green and the Middle East Green initiatives last weekend. They aim to reduce carbon emissions in the Middle East, tackle deforestation, enhance the efficiency of oil production and increase the contribution of renewable energy.

“Extreme E represents an insight into what the exciting future of motorsports will look like, an incredibly competitive future that is conscious about the need to preserve our global environment. The fact this all begins from Saudi Arabia is testament to the Kingdom’s leading position as a world class hub for motorsports, and its role as a driving force in the movement towards more environmentally friendly means of energy production,” added Prince Khaled.

Extreme E is the latest global sporting event brought to Saudi Arabia to help inspire the next generation of Saudis into taking up sport as part of Saudi Vision 2030 and the Quality of Life Program. The Desert X Prix follows the likes of Formula E, Rally Dakar, Anthony Joshua’s ‘Clash on the Dunes’ world boxing title fight with Andy Ruiz Jr, European Tour and Ladies European Tour golf, international tennis and both Spanish and Italian Super Cup matches, all being held in the Kingdom as means to inspire the Saudi people.
